Bellarine and Geelong

Environmental Volunteering Calendar

Join the Clifton Springs Curlewis Coastcare to remove weeds from the fragile coastline.

Join Clifton Springs Curlewis Coastcare and the City of Greater Geelong staff to learn about invasive weeds that affect our Coastline and assist the group to remove weeds from one of our beautiful beaches.

Environmental weeds such as Sea Spurge compete with native plant species for nutrients, water, sunlight and space. They can form dense areas of vegetation that shade and smother native species therefore negatively impacting Coastal ecosystems. At this session we will tackle an infestation of Sea spurge (Euphorbia paralias) at the Clifton Springs foreshore (see image below).

Meet west of Beacon Point, beach access ramp Edgewater Drive.

Some parking available on the grassed area during the event. Look out for signage at the top of the ramp to the beach, near the lookout platform. All welcome.

There will be a brief introduction and safety assessment at the meeting point before starting activities on the foreshore, mainly weeding by hand. If you have, bring your hand weeding fork/puller or small trowel.

Please bring the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) if you can: Hat, Sunscreen, Suitable footwear (no open shoes), Long/ longs are recommended, Gloves (we will have spares if required), Sunglasses (protective eyewear). Gardening equipment will be provided. Bring own food and drink.

The Clifton Springs Curlewis Coastcare Group and Bellarine Catchment Network (BCN), works in partnership with the City of Greater Geelong (CoGG), and the Corangamite Catchment Management Authority (CCMA). The group works on habitat restoration and environmental monitoring of the marine and foreshore areas and promotes the awareness of their environmental values in the community.

Join us at family-friendly activity at Lake Lorne in Drysdale to be immersed in the environment. During this event we will learn about the local wetland birds seen in Lake Lorne, will learn about local frogs and how to identify their calls and how to, and why you should, use citizen science apps like iNaturalist. We will also help you to identify some fantastic locally indigenous plants, as well as the invasive weeds that are found all along the Bellarine Rail Trail.

Grab a brochure, booklet or guide to plants and animals while at this family-friendly session.

This event is supported by Landcare Australia Limited.

Come for a walk with the Clifton Springs Curlewis Coastcare to celebrate World Seagrass Day.

World Seagrass Day is a day of awareness and celebration of the role seagrass plays in creating healthier oceans, coastlines and its role as a climate solution. It serves to highlight the importance of protecting seagrass ecosystems and increasing their resilience to challenges such as climate change, pollution and other human impacts.

Hello to all volunteers past, present and newcomers.

We are about to hit the ground running with the new HP breeding season about to begin. It would be wonderful to catch up with as many as possible to meet one another, and share ideas, information, or other enquiries anyone has prior to the season taking off. There has been lots happening in the background to prepare for this season and it will be a great opportunity to share all things Hoodie.

Hopefully this date suits most. Please feel free to contact me if you can't make it in person but could possible meet by a microsoft Teams invite.

Looking forward to seeing many of you and catching up with our local Hoodies on the beach!

Cheers to all things Hoodie!
