SUMMARY: This is an ideal opportunity for anyone including kids, families and beginners to join an excursion within easy reach of Geelong suburbs and with great accessibility. Non GFNC members are welcome.
TIME: Meet at 9.15am meet and sign in for a 9:30am start. We will finish at 11:30 am.
MEET: Near the informal carpark on Reserve Rd, Drysdale. Parking is available along Reserve Rd if the carpark is full. There will be a GFNC signed table and gazebo by the lake. That will be our base.
ACTIVITIES: Lake Lorne is a permanent wetland and well known for its birdlife, with over 120 speciess recorded in the last 2 years. On a good day it’s possible to spot over 40 species and it’s possible to get good views of water birds. We’ll have some bird walks around the lake (a full circuit is 1.8 km walk on level paved paths) , or you can watch from the lake shore near our base.
We will have pond dipping equipment and hand lenses to share and will see what small animals we can identify living in the water (I’ll add water testing note if it happens)
BRING: Clothes to suit the weather, hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, walking shoes, camera (a phone camera is often good for pond creatures), drinking water (some will be available). There will be several binoculars to share, but please bring your own if you have a pair. Kids (and adults) may get wet/muddy feet from pond dipping.
TOILETS: Toilets at the Drysdale station, about 750m walk (or a short drive) from meeting point. There is also a playground there.
